The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was dealt a significant blow as 63 influential chieftains from the party in Idanre Local Government Area (LGA) of Ondo State defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Friday, July 21.
Among the defectors were key figures such as Idowu Akinseye, the chairman of the PDP Elders' Forum in the area, Marcus Adeoti, former special adviser to former governor Olusegun Mimiko, Lad Owoseni, former chairman of Timber Finishers, and Brigadier Omogbemi, as reported by The Nation.
The defection also included Chief Banji Kuroloja, former personal secretary to the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Chief Korede Duyile, and Professor John Jejela, among others. In their joint statement, the defectors cited their reasons for joining the APC, emphasizing that their move would bolster the party's strength in the forthcoming LGA and governorship elections.
Engineer Ade Adetimehin, the Ondo APC chairman, warmly welcomed the new members, highlighting their political prowess that had previously contributed to the PDP's electoral victories. With this recent influx of influential figures into the APC, the party has further solidified its position in Idanre and its surrounding areas, as reported by Daily Independent.
