In a significant ruling, the National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal in Asaba, Delta State, has invalidated the election of Ngozi Okolie from the Labour Party (LP) as a member representing Aniocha/Oshimili Constituency in the House of Representatives. The tribunal's decision, delivered on Monday, July 24, came as a result of finding that Okolie lacked proper sponsorship from the LP, as he was not a member of the party during the purported May 28, 2022 primary.
Following this ruling, Ndudi Elumelu of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), who was the runner-up in the national assembly election held on February 25, 2023, has been declared the winner by the tribunal. Elumelu, the immediate past minority leader of the house of representatives, had lodged a petition with the tribunal, seeking to disqualify Okolie, who was initially proclaimed the winner of the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The tribunal has now upheld Elumelu's request, thus changing the outcome of the election in Aniocha/Oshimili Constituency.
