Several legislative aides and National Assembly workers have been apprehended by security operatives for looting various offices within the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.
According to reports, the individuals involved engaged in last-minute theft, taking away television sets, cabinet shelves, electronics, printers, furniture, air conditioners, rugs, and carpets, just as the 10th National Assembly was about to resume its activities on Tuesday.
Sources indicate that the suspects were caught attempting to leave the complex without proper authorization or passes for the pilfered items.
Chuks Obaloje, the Sergeant-at-Arms at the National Assembly, confirmed the incident but was unable to provide further details, as he was not present at the time it occurred. He directed inquiries to the Crime Division of the National Assembly.
When contacted, the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the National Assembly Complex, Alex Annagu, declined to comment on the matter. The spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory Police Command, Josephine Adeh, also stated that she could not provide details as she had been unable to reach the DPO for information.
Rawlings Agada, the Director of Information at the National Assembly, commented on the theft and the subsequent arrest of the culprits, highlighting the effectiveness of the National Assembly's security. He explained that individuals were prevented from leaving with items that did not belong to them.
Agada emphasized that each office was issued a pass containing a list of authorized items for removal. If an item not listed on the pass was discovered, it was not allowed to be taken out.
He further emphasized the importance of security checks both when entering and leaving the premises, underscoring the need to ensure compliance with the authorized procedures.
