The Presidential Election Petition Court has rejected the application made by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, to have the court proceedings broadcasted live.
The five-man panel, headed by Justice Haruna Tsammani, deemed the request lacking in merit and dismissed it.
The court emphasized that the presence of cameras in the courtroom is a significant judicial policy that must be supported by the law. However, the ruling stated that there was no legal framework or policy direction in place to grant the application.
Justice Tsammani stated that the court is bound to adhere to the practice directions and procedures approved by the President of the Court of Appeal. Allowing a live broadcast could potentially lead to the dramatization of proceedings, which the court aims to avoid.
Additionally, the court noted that the request for a live broadcast was not among the reliefs sought by the petitioners and had no impact on the case.
It concluded that a live broadcast would not contribute to the resolution of the petitions, as the petitioners failed to establish how it would advance their arguments.
