Suspected bandits launched a deadly assault on the communities of Kwassam and Sabon Layi Kan Makama in Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State, resulting in the tragic loss of six lives and the abduction of numerous residents, including a retired director from the Central Bank of Nigeria.
The Southern Kaduna Peoples Union verified the distressing incident, confirming that over 50 individuals were forcefully taken by the assailants.
While the state government, through Commissioner Samuel Aruwan, acknowledged the attack, specific details regarding the casualties and the number of abductees were not disclosed.
Governor Uba Sani expressed his condemnation of the assault and extended condolences to the bereaved families. He emphasized the need for intensified military operations against bandits throughout the state to address the escalating security challenges.
According to sources, the bandits, operating in a large group, stormed the community, unleashing indiscriminate gunfire and forcibly taking two individuals who led them to the residence of the retired CBN director, where he was abducted. Subsequently, they targeted his brother and sister-in-law at their family home.
During the chaos, residents who attempted to intervene were met with gunfire, resulting in the deaths of six individuals and injuries to six others.
Among the deceased were identified as Danmasani Gwaska, Mrs. Giwa John, Kapishi Barmu, Ganya Ubangida, Shigama Salisu, and Gani Magawata.
Those abducted from Sabon Layi Kan Makama included Zakariya Markus, the retired CBN director, his brother Monday Markus, his wife, as well as Alhamdu Makeri's son and Baban Fati of Kauru, among others.
