Prominent Lawyer Apprehended by Police for Assaulting Wife in Viral Video

Uyo-based lawyer Ekere Ebong, whose violent behavior towards his wife went viral in a video, has been apprehended and placed in police custody in Akwa Ibom State. The arrest took place on Monday, as reported by Akwa Ibom police spokesperson Odiko Macdon.

A widely circulated photo on a WhatsApp platform depicts Mr. Ebong with handcuffed hands, standing along a corridor at the Uyo police headquarters. In the image, he wears a blue suit and appears downcast, although it remains unclear if the police officially released the photo. The police, labeling the lawyer as a "known habitual perpetrator of violent acts against his wife," assured that he would face charges once the investigation is complete.

Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State issued a statement in Uyo on Monday, expressing strong condemnation for the gender-based violence and pledging government assistance to ensure justice for the assaulted woman. Governor Eno asserted that the state has zero tolerance for gender-based violence and expressed satisfaction with Mr. Ebong's arrest, emphasizing that he would be charged soon.

Describing Mr. Ebong's actions as contrary to Akwa Ibom's culture, Governor Eno underscored the government's commitment to supporting the victim and ensuring legal action in accordance with anti-gender-based violence laws. In the viral video, the assaulted woman, clad only in underwear with a bloodied face, is seen crying for help and breathing heavily.
