President Bola Tinubu's federal administration has taken further steps to prevent the impending nationwide indefinite strike, which has been spearheaded by organized labor. The government has extended an invitation to union leaders for another round of discussions. As reported by The Nation, this peace meeting is set to take place at 2 pm on Sunday, October 1, within the presidential villa in Abuja.
In a previous attempt to convene a meeting, the federal government had scheduled a gathering with organized labor on Friday, September 29. However, the union's leadership failed to attend, resulting in the meeting's cancellation. In response, a memorandum was issued by Emmanuel Igbinosun, the Director of Trade Union Services and Industrial Relations from the Ministry of Labour and Employment, acting on behalf of the minister. The memorandum was addressed to the President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (APC), inviting union leaders to the Chief of Staff's Conference Room in the state house on Sunday.
The expected attendees from the union side include representatives and leaders from the NLC and its counterparts in the Trade Union Congress (TUC). Government representatives slated to participate in the meeting include Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff to the President, Simon Lalong, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Nkiruka Onyejeocha, the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, as well as other high-ranking government officials.
The memorandum specifies the details of the meeting, stating, "I am directed to invite the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for a meeting with the Government on the above subject scheduled as follows: Date: Sunday, October 1st, 2023; Time: 2 pm; Venue: Aso Villa Conference Room of the office of the Chief of Staff to Mr. President."
