The disclosure was made during the presentation of the July 2023 report titled "Maximising national integrated projects" at the Nigeria Energy Forum. The report was presented by Ifeoluwa Oyedele, the Executive Director of Networks at NDPHC, and obtained in Abuja. NDPHC is a private limited liability company incorporated under the Companies and Allied Matters Act, with shareholdings from the federal, state, and local governments. Its primary mandate is to manage the power projects known as 'National Integrated Power Projects.'
Oyedele explained that while the projects had been handed over to the Discos, the legal assets transfer was still in progress and awaiting valuation by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission.
The executed projects in the distribution subsector include 337 33/11kV lines, 25,281 25kVA and 50kVA CSP transformers, 199 distribution transformers of various capacities, 2,256km of 33kV lines, and 4,670km of 11kV lines. In the power transmission subsector, NDPHC also undertook over 121 transmission line and substation projects. Expansion works were carried out in 34 substations of the Transmission Company of Nigeria, including those in Enugu, Jos, and Owerri.
The transmission subsector projects include a total of 51 substations with transmission capacities, 2,703km of 330kV lines, 765km of 132kV lines, and 25 ongoing projects. These efforts have transformed the Nigerian grid from a radial system to a substantially looped grid, providing substantial redundancy to power flow across the country.
However, the report also highlighted some challenges in power generation and operations. Despite an installed capacity of around 4,000 megawatts, NDPHC faces constraints in transmitting power, with only about 700MW being dispatched on average by the System Operator due to load rejection by the Discos.
